LECTURES

Necessary Angel of the Earth

Necessary Angel of the Earth

This is a slide I use often in my lectures. It was inspired by something, poet, Bob Baker drew on the board in a graduate seminar an ex-girlfriend of mine took years ago. He was breaking down a Wallace Stevens poem which has a line in it about the necessary angel of the Earth, and Bob asked the class what they wanted from their lives and from their work... from what place did they confront the world???

and he explained that the necessary angel of the earth approaches the world at a 45 degree angle between serving the god within and serving the god outside....

History of Pigment

2009. This lecture was performed in the basement of the Portland Art Museum while the audience used pestle and mortar to grind Azurite into ultramarine blue pigment. As they ground their pigment the chandelier lightbulbs flickered and the whole thing felt like being in the belly of a sinking ship.

This is a lecture I gave titled Absolute Absolution, 2011 on the Boatel's floating stage. This particular image is of my me and my brother trying to sail our dad down a windy street in an office chair. My lectures often include survivalist advice from my marine biologist father.
